Sarah's Nutrition Tips - February 2014

Protein packed lunch boxes

It is the start of the 2014 school year. Congratulations Howick you made it through the school holidays!

By now all the hard decisions have been made, new schools selected, uniforms bought, Smiggle is out of stock, and mums and dads can begin to relax!

Probably the last thing on anybody’s mind is “WHAT’S FOR LUNCH?” but it might surprise you how important this is.

Our kids need the best fuel to power their active bodies, minds, and to give them the best chance to succeed at school.

Like us they need a balance of macronutrients – they need carbohydrates, good fats and proteins.

Protein is particularly important for kids and often is overlooked when it comes to lunchbox selections. Kids need protein to support their SUPER-FAST growing bodies!

Protein helps build muscles, tissues and organs and also helps build a strong immune system, which is particularly useful for the school year!

Excellent sources of protein are eggs, meat, and fish. Meat is one of the best sources of protein, containing all nine essential amino acids, which our body requires from our diet daily.

Try boosting the protein content of your child’s lunch by adding a hard-boiled egg or two and meat such as chicken, beef or pork to their sandwiches.

Common lunchbox fillers like chips and cookies can be tasty treats, but are of little nutritional benefit for kids. They can cause spikes in blood sugar and energy crashes, making it difficult for kids to concentrate, and learn in class.

So remember, to keep our kids strong, and healthy throughout the school year, and to support their rapidly growing bodies – a healthy, balanced lunch with plenty of protein is the way to go!

All the best for 2014!
